What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

NLP is a multi-dimensional methodology of communication, personal development and change. It seeks to understand the dynamics and interaction of the human nervous system and mind (neuro), language and communication (linguistic) and the organisation of human thought processes and patterns (programming) to effect positive and beneficial personal change.

If we were to think of the brain as a computer running a large number of ‘programs’ (the brain’s ‘software’), NLP teaches the client to reorganise or re-pattern the way that these ‘programs’ are run to enable dramatic transformations and changes to take place.

The Historical Development of NLP

The development of NLP began in the 1970s when Dr. Richard Bandler & John Grinder set out to understand and model what it was that made the most effective communicators so effective.

Bandler and Grinder believed that therapists were among the most effective communicators as they were able to initiate amazing transformations within their clients apparently just through talking with them. With this in mind, they set about modelling some of the leading therapists of the day, including Fritz Perls (the founder of Gestalt therapy), Virginia Satir (a renowned family therapist) and Milton H. Erickson M.D. (the world’s leading hypnotherapist at that time). In modelling the verbal and non-verbal patterns used by these most elegant and persuasive communicators and proponents of personal change, they identified a variety of patterns that could be used to replicate the astounding results they had observed in the work of these pre-eminent therapists. NLP started out, therefore, as a field to study and model the structure of excellence in communication. This approach to understanding the structure of subjective experience, language and thought processes became known as Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The field of NLP has continued to develop and be refined over the last thirty years and is now widely used in many areas of change work and personal development. It is not simply a technology to fix problems but seeks to go far beyond that to facilitate ‘generative’ change i.e. to empower the client to make improvements in all areas of their life.

What can I expect from seeing a therapist or life coach trained in NLP?

A session with an NLP trained therapist or life coach will typically be quite conversational with the practitioner using a range of language skills and strong observational and listening skills to elicit precisely how the client is experiencing ‘reality’ and using transformational and hypnotic communication to help the client change their subjective experience of ‘reality’ to gain new perspectives and become aware of the wide range of possibilities and opportunities that are available.

In contrast to many approaches to therapy, NLP works on an assumption that old experiences or traumas do not have to be relived in order for change to occur. NLP believes that all experience is subjective and that we respond to our internal representation of events, not to the events themselves. Experience has a structure inside our minds so if we change the structure, we change the experience.

As human beings, we are driven by a large number of automatic ‘patterns’ or ‘programs’ that are largely outside of conscious awareness. An NLP practitioner will concentrate less on ‘why’ the client is experiencing the issues or problems they are experiencing and more on ‘how’ the client uses certain ‘patterns’ and ‘programs’ to hold the issue, problem or limiting belief in place.

So, the practitioner will focus on understanding the context of the problem (when/where does it occur… when doesn’t it occur?), the process the client goes through in order to produce the problem (what triggers the problem off… when is everything OK?), and the structure of the problem within the clients mind (does the client criticise themselves inside in a harsh tonality first, get a feeling in the stomach and then perhaps make pictures in their mind of things going wrong?).

In much the same way that Bandler and Grinder modelled excellence, an NLP practitioner will seek to understand the structure of their problem and work with the client to interrupt or spoil the limiting pattern and replace it with something more useful. Also, the client will undoubtedly have experienced many positive and resourceful states that can be accessed and utilised to overwrite the previously held limiting behaviour or belief ‘programs’.

Human beings are the most amazing learning machines so if we can easily learn limiting behaviours then we can equally easily learn more useful behaviours and access more resourceful emotional states. A good example of this is a phobia. People can develop debilitating phobias from a single bad experience. It is this capacity to learn rapidly that is utilised by an NLP practitioner to eliminate the phobia just as quickly as it was originally acquired.

There are a large number of powerful techniques that NLP practitioners use to change the structure of how the client subjectively experiences reality and to facilitate permanent and positive changes.

Hypnosis will often also play a part during sessions with an NLP practitioner. Hypnosis is a powerful way to ensure that learnings are integrated into the subconscious more quickly and permanently than perhaps could be achieved without hypnosis. Even if a formal trance induction does not take place during your sessions, you can be sure that a skilled NLP practitioner is communicating at many different levels to help facilitate change.

What can NLP be used for?

NLP is successfully used to overcome phobias, addictions and depression, reduce anxiety and stress, eliminate limiting beliefs, gain greater control over emotional states, improve communication, enhance performance, achieve goals, and perhaps most importantly, find ways to increase the amount of happiness and joy people have in their lives.

In this video Michael discusses the difference between integrating the principles of NLP and learning just the techniques.

Not only is Micheal sharing his opinions, he is doing some teaching, using some language patterns (see if you can identify which ones) and doing a bit of selling.

Some of the discussion is high level (you need some NLP background to grasp), but the breezy style of the video and the jazzy music make the video very watchable.

Enjoy

Identify trigger where is moves away from whats wanted

Reframing to a new sequence

Shifting submodalities to increase motivation

Checking for congruity

Future pacing

At the outset let me simply say that my perspectives and thoughts about sales and selling stem from a study and interest in human communication and behavior. This means that if you asked me a few years or so ago what a sales process was I’d simply say that it was when a sales person ‘pitches’ their product; uses convincing and persuasive language, secures a commitment and then either secures or walks away from the deal.

Before applying NLP frames…

I saw the process as being led – dominated – by the sales professional.

What became apparent to me was that there were some sales people I was encountering in my own consultancy who were doing something a bit different.

As an NLP trainer I was noticing the language patterns and approaches used by certain sales professionals.

They had obviously received some NLP based training and were, in my opinion, using some ‘convincer’ and ‘persuader’ statements and questions laden with presuppositions but without thought or heart. It was as if they had been given a language formula which they used ‘parrot fashion’ without understanding the elegance or beauty of the communication pattern itself.

As some of you will know NLP. is about modelling so I set myself a project to look at sales people and the sales process.

I was initially disappointed by some of the traditional ideas I was discovering; A.B.C. – always be closing and F.U.D. – fear, uncertainty doubt, for example.

After applying NLP frames…

Then I came across salespeople who were exponents of Sandler system and the “GAZING” process… they were talking about “listening”, “pain” and “pain points”…much more interesting.

What became apparent was that there had been a fundamental shift from a ‘sales-person centered” approach to a “client centered” or “collaborative” approach. Put another way the shift from product features and benefits to problems and solutions.

Of course for this shift to show real results there needed to be two major changes The ‘new school’ ideas not only suggested behavior changes but also shifts in the sales attitude (mindset).

A client centered or collaborative focus, with an emphasis on dialogue and problem solving requires the sales professional to engage in a sales process which is markedly different from the simple “product-benefit-cost-sale” pitch.

In many ways it does not matter which sales process you have provided that you stick to it and that it allows for a problem-finding, negotiation-based approach to providing value solutions for the customer.

In keeping with my own background in NLP (which in its early days often used ‘magic’ as a metaphor) and my interests in psychology and conjuring, I use the following mnemonics to outline stages of an ‘initial sales meeting’ and a sales process.

The Initial sales meeting is a meeting of MINDS and the sales-persons key intention should be to simply get another meeting!

A Meeting of MINDS

Meet – introduce, build rapport, listen

Inspire – trust, confidence

Needs - discover pains, goals and dreams

Define- next steps

The initial Sales Process then, needs to focus on problem (pain) identification within the context of the clients business needs and goals. It requires the sales person to inspire confidence and trust and they can only do this through the behaviors they exhibit – what they say and do. It is in the coaching of the behavioural aspects of sales training which makes NLP such a useful tool.

A MAGIC Solution Meeting

Meet – meet, build rapport

Agree- aims of the meeting, expectations

Generate -information about processes, customers needs, pains, dreams

Inspire – confidence and trust

Create/Collaborate – with customer on next steps and with own team on value offer

What the professional sales person does next, how they communicate their understanding of the client needs (pains) in the context of their business challenges (not the sales-persons), how they use the information they have obtained and offer meaningful follow-up is what really makes the difference.

NLP techniques can be used to enhance the communication skills of the sales person but do need to be linked to models of creative, solutions focused thinking. This is at the core of the current sales training and coaching we offer.

Management is a very important part of society. Organizations, businesses, churches, and even families depend on it. Management differs from leadership in many ways. To manage means more than just handling people. It involves handling all resources and tools in an organization to meet specific goals, by uniting people to work together for that specific purpose. Thus, without effective management skills, a business enterprise, organization, or family will experience disorientation and confusion.

Where does NLP fit in?

Neuro-linguistic Programming, or NLP, offers a myriad of techniques and methods that can help improve management skills. Many managers and leaders are starting to look into the very rich study of NLP to find solutions to the management related problems they usually face everyday. By learning and applying these NLP tactics in day to day situations, a manager, CEO, father, minister, or any kind of person tasked with any managerial responsibility, will be able to handle people better.

NLP Training is the best way to make the changes you need with yourself and others. NLP Training will give you the tools that will allow you to become more motivated, focused and have a more positive direction in life due the new way of thinking.

As an example, let’s look at weight loss and how an NLP Training will help you assist people looking at reducing their weight. Typically somebody overweight does not eat and exercise as well as they should. They also might eat the wrong foods like chocolate! So after an NLP Training you will be able to remove their desire to eat such foods. With their motivation you will learn a technique of chaining anchors.

This will have your client highly motivated, in fact the moment they think about procrastination they will end up at a highly motivated state all by using memories and pictures! Now to get the client to this point you would need to explain and reframe the client’s way of thinking. Many people are very much stuck in their problem and do not have the ability to think outside of what is possible and not possible so it is very important that you use your skills in building rapport to help move the client towards what is possible.

Now the good news is that by attending an NLP Training you will experience all these techniques first hand. You will also see how they work with many people as well as feel the effects yourself. The Basic NLP training or Practitioner level, as it is referred to by most people, gives you a number of these tools, which all very valuable and all that you can use to great success in a number or areas.

NLP is not only used for personal development. Many people learn the art of NLP to increase their sales and ability to communicate with people in many different ways. This will give you an edge over and above any other sales person. At an NLP training you will learn how people communicate as to be able to better serve them. This is a valuable skill for a sales person. Of course better communication will lead to an increase in compliance with anyone that you need to communicate with which is a very valuable skill. It is not anything that is difficult to do or learn. In fact you would already be doing a lot of the techniques. But knowing how and when to use the techniques and using them with volition is the important part.

Looking for some serious NLP training option? Now a days you can learn NLP from the comfort of your own home.
